Week One Reflections

Week One Reflections

My first week at EMERGE has been full of energy, warmth, and a sense of purpose that makes me even more grateful to be here. From day one, I’ve seen a team deeply committed to students’ success. Whether it was conversations about college advisor visits and the impact they have, lunch table discussions about how HBCUs fit into our strategy, or the laughter and quick connection during Thursday’s icebreaker, the passion and dedication in this team are undeniable.

I was also struck by the thoughtful questions you asked on Thursday. They showed not only how strong and inquisitive this group is but also how much leadership and clarity you’ve been waiting for. In some ways it felt like things were on pause until now. That comes with responsibility, but also possibility. I see a group ready to dig in and step confidently into our next chapter.

I’m grateful for the many smiles, welcomes, and words of encouragement. I also appreciated the small gestures, like the stack of paper that vanished from my desk after I mentioned it as a pet peeve. Those touches of responsiveness and care tell me a lot about who you are as a team.

Looking ahead, next week will be about getting more grounded:

  • Mapping out my calendar to create space for lunches and conversations with staff.
  • Working through one-on-one meetings with board members, funders, and community leaders.
  • Sitting with the information I need, including financials, strategic plans, and our current service delivery model.
  • Addressing some immediate district needs.

I also want to start shadowing some of you in sessions with students. That is the heart of our work, and I don’t want to lose sight of it amidst everything else. Invite me along — I’d love to learn by seeing the work through your eyes.

This week made it clear: if we all do our part, the sky is the limit. Thank you for the welcome. I’m excited for what we’re building together.
